Zac Bertschy in Memoriam

The Kodansha USA Publishing team was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing last week of Zac Bertschy, writer, podcast host, executive editor at Anime News Network, and longtime friend to us and to the manga industry.

Over two decades at Anime News Network, Zac was a constant amid the anime and manga world’s ebb and flow. At a time when there were very few ways to read reliable anime and manga news in the U.S., he raised standards, pounded the pavement at conventions, and wrote tirelessly, helping shape ANN into a daily must-read.

As a critic, Zac’s judgments were sharp, but he was not a cynic. He relished the joy of falling in love with a hidden gem and sharing it with the world. We’re grateful that he did so much to spread the word about the manga he loved –which included many Kodansha Comics titles –in his podcast, writing, and boisterous convention panels. He was a booster of the art form itself, always trying to find more ways to cover manga even when flashier forms of entertainment threatened to take over the spotlight.

We offer our deepest condolences to his family, his loved ones, his colleagues, and the many who encountered his writing, his voice, or the man himself at an event and found a kindred spirit in a relentless world.

Contributions have been requested in Zac’s memory to the Glendale Humane Society and the Trevor Project. To express a small part of what Zac meant to us, Kodansha Comics will be donating to the Trevor Project in his honor, and we hope you’ll join us.

Rest in peace, Zac. We’ll miss you.

Parasyte, Volume 1: SILENT INVASION
By Hitoshi Iwaaki

They arrive in silence and darkness. They descend from the skies. They have a hunger for human flesh. They are everywhere. They are parasites, alien creatures who must invade—and take control of—a human host to survive. And once they have infected their victims, they can assume any deadly form they choose: monsters with giant teeth, winged demons, creatures with blades for hands. But most have chosen to conceal their lethal purpose behind ordinary human faces. So no one knows their secret—except an ordinary high school student. Shin is battling for control of his own body against an alien parasite, but can he find a way to warn humanity of the horrors to come?

“Gives the phrase ‘talk to the hand’ a whole new meaning. Alien spores roughly the size of tennis balls fall to earth one night; from within crawl sluglike creatures that burrow their way into the brains of humans, effectively killing them and taking over their bodies … Violence is graphic and often shocking, depicted in a style reminiscent of western comics and H.R. Giger. The ordinary nature of the rest of the illustration gives the whole book an unsettling edge, a sort of subliminal ‘it could happen anywhere’ vibe. A cult favorite manga.” —Publishers Weekly

Journey beyond the manga & anime with the Manga to Novel spotlight!

Watched the anime? Read the Manga? NOW read the novel!

Oh you didn’t know? Glad you asked somebody! This month we at Kodansha USA Publishing wanted to share some outstanding literary works that expand and give you a deeper look at fan-favorite series like Attack on Titan, The Seven Deadly Sins and Your Lie in April. Check out some of our favorites spotlighted below and a full list of other novels that will let you dive even deeper into some of your favorite manga stories!

Most of these books are in both print/digital and can be purchased online from our retail partners including: Barnes & Noble, Books A Million,, Hudson Booksellers, IndieBound, Powell’s, Target, Walmart, Amazon.

Attack on Titan: The Harsh Mistress of the City, Part 1
By Ryo Kawakami, Created by Hajime Isayama

An Attack on Titan side story in light-novel form—detailing in two volumes the fate of the Quinta District after Wall Maria is breached.

With Wall Maria breeched, communities within the Quinta district have been cut off from each other creating famine and chaos. A young field commander named Rita is tasked with a mission to reconnect transit across the massive district while putting her troops and residence right in the vanguard as Titans descend on her town.

BAKEMONOGATARI : Monster Tale, Part 1

There’s a girl at their school who is always ill. She routinely arrives late, leaves early, or doesn’t show up at all, and skips gym as a matter of course. She’s pretty, and the boys take to whispering that she’s a cloistered princess. As the self-described worst loser in her class soon finds out, they just don’t know what a monster she is.

So begins a tale of mysterious maladies that are supernatural in origin yet deeply revealing of the human psyche, a set of case files as given to unexpected feeling as it is to irreverent humor. So begins the legendary novel that kicked off the MONOGATARI series, whose anime adaptations have enjoyed international popularity and critical acclaim.

This first of three parts introduces Senjogahara and Hachikuji, and fans of the blockbuster prequel KIZUMONOGATARI will be delighted to meet their favorite crazies again: the weirdly reliable narrator Araragi, class president among class presidents Hanekawa, shady problem-solver Oshino, and a certain pale, blonde former vampire.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Seven Scars They Left Behind
By Shuka Matsuda, Created by Nakaba Suzuki

The Seven Deadly Sins—a legendary order that once served the Kingdom of Liones as the mightiest of its Holy Knights—stand accused of treason and have fled the realm. Princess Margaret and young Gilthunder, the slain commander Zaratras’ son, know the terrible truth about the betrayal but dare not speak of it, not even to each other.

The aftermath of the event that shook Britannia comes to life in seven prose chapters that provide a superb introduction to the rich world of the original comic and satisfy longtime fans’ craving for more. Illustrated in a classic, warm style by the creator himself, Seven Scars They Left Behind walks the royal road of fantasy.

Voices of a Distant Star : Words of Love/ Across the Stars
Story By Makoto Shinkai, Adapted by Arata Kanoh

Award-winning director and author Makoto Shinkai offers a romantic sci-fi tale about young love and space adventure, based on his animated film. This new novel gives readers more insight into Mikako and Noboru’s relationship. Fans of the original series will again be immersed in the beautiful world of Shinkai.

It’s the year 2046. Mikako Nagamine and Noboru Terao are middle school classmates, tentatively sharing an unspoken first love—but unbeknownst to him, Mikako has been recruited into the UN Space Force, and instead of going on to high school, will join the spacecraft Lysithea to search for alien Tarsians. As she travels further and further to the outer reaches of the solar system, the time it takes for a text message to reach the Earth grows longer and longer. Back on Earth, time passes normally for Noboru, but as the years pass he still can’t forget the voice on the other side of the cell phone…

Steeped in nostalgia and memory, Arata Kanoh brings to the page the award-winning OVA by acclaimed filmmaker Makoto Shinkai, director of Garden of Words, 5 Centimeters per Second, and the highest-grossing anime film of all time, Your Name. Arata Kanoh is a writer who has produced novelizations of Makoto Shinkai’s other works, including 5 Centimeters Per Second (also available from Vertical).

Your Lie in April : A Six-Person Etude
By Yui Tokiumi, Created by Naoshi Arakawa

There’s not a competition that piano prodigy Arima hasn’t won since he started playing. His renditions are matchless in their precision. When he’s only eleven, however, his peerless fingers fall silent—right up there on stage.

Exploring the shock of the incident and its aftermath from his friends and rivals’ perspectives, A Six-Person Etude accompanies the boy’s halting efforts to pick himself up as an adolescent. Based on the hit series, these prose chapters expand on the original but form a coherent and hard-hitting tale of its own.

The Drops of God Volumes 12-22 debut in English for the first time ever!

The Drops of God Volumes 12-22 Digitally Available Today

in English for the First Time from ComiXology Originals

May 6, 2020—New York, NY—Today, comiXology and Kodansha Comics released volumes 12-22 of the international bestseller The Drops of God manga series in English for the first time. These eleven volumes join the previously released volumes 1-11 and can be read digitally as part of the comiXology Originals line of exclusive content at no additional cost for members of Amazon Prime via their Prime Reading benefit, Kindle Unlimited and comiXology Unlimited. These titles are also available for purchase on Kindle and comiXology. More volumes will be added at a later date, eventually completing the forty-four volume series.

Created and written by Tadashi Agi with artwork by Shu Okimoto, The Drops of God has had an unprecedented impact on the international wine market and the various wines featured throughout the series.

When world-renowned wine critic Kanzaki Yutaka passes away, his will reveals that his fortune of a wine collection isn’t automatically bequeathed to his only son Kanzaki Shizuku, a junior employee at a Japanese beverage company whose main focus is selling beer. In order to take ownership of his legacy and the inheritance, he must correctly identify and describe thirteen wines, the first twelve heaven-sent wines known as the “Twelve Apostles” and the thirteenth known as the “Drops of God,” while competing against the stellar young wine critic, Toomine Issei. With determination, a strong sense of taste and smell, and an uncanny ability to describe his experiences, Shizuku submerges himself in the world of wine to try to solve its mysteries and defeat Issei.

In October 2019 Tadashi Agi joined forces with vintner Peter Chiang to launch the Drops of God Wine Salon—a paradigm-shattering wine experience including a thoughtfully curated wine club and personal wine recommendations for members. To learn more, please visit:
