Beginning in July 2016, Kodansha will publish the 1978 space opera Queen Emeraldas in its first-ever English release. Artist Leiji Matsumoto, possibly best known for his involvement with Space Battleship Yamato, which aired in North America as Star Blazers, is a superstar in Japan and Europe (he directed a feature-length music video for Daft Punk in 2003) but has long been absent from the American manga market. One of his most beloved creations, Queen Emeraldas follows young man Hiroshi Umino after he sneaks aboard a spaceship in order to leave Earth. Queen Emeraldas is coming in July 2016 and will be published in two large-format, hardcover volumes of over 400 pages each.

It’s a romance manga with a dose of mystery! The first volume of Forget Me Not will be released in March 2016.

Kodansha also announced Complex Age, from creator Yui Sakuma, which offers an in-depth look at the life of cosplayer Nagisa Kataura as she gets older and tries to keep her beloved hobby a secret. The series is a thoughtful story sure to resonate with American cosplayers, tackling issues like work-hobby balance, jealous cosplay rivals, and dealing with harassment. Paradise Residence is a new manga from the creator of Oh My Goddess! and You’re Under Arrest,  Kosuke Fujishima. It follows Hatsune Takanashi—a clumsy schoolgirl who attends the Kitsuka Boarding School—and her trials living in the all-girls dormitory. This new series will debut in March 2016, and will be published in an oversized format.

Coming early 2016: Magatsuki, Real Account, Princess Jellyfish

Princess Jellyfish 1

LOS ANGELES (July 5, 2015) – During their panel at Anime Expo, Kodansha Comics announced three new series launches: Magatsuki, Princess Jellyfish, and Real Account. The publisher also announced the acceleration of fan favorite Noragami to a monthly release schedule.

Beginning in February 2016, Kodansha will release the anticipated fan favorite Princess Jellyfish, from acclaimed creator Akiko Higashimura. Tsukimi, who has loved jellyfish from a young age, resides in Amamizukan, a fangirl-only dorm. One evening at the local pet store, Tsukimi sees a lovely jellyfish in danger, but a beautiful woman comes to the rescue. They go back to Amamizukan together, but this “woman”… is actually a man! This long-awaited release will be published in deluxe, large-format 2-in-1 editions. With over 400 pages in each volume, color pages, and bonus special features, this will be the edition to own for newcomers and collectors alike.

Kodansha’s second new license, Magatsuki, from creator Hoshino Taguchi, follows 15-year-old Yasuke Arahabaki, who accidentally breaks a sacred mirror in his house's shrine. This accident releases Seori, a goddess of misfortune, and triggers a curse that forces them to stay close together or die. To lift the curse, Yasuke must help Seori achieve happiness – despite the bad luck she carries with her. It all gets more complicated when Yasuke's childhood friend and mutual crush, Akari Inamori, suddenly becomes the new owner of Yasuke's lost soul. How will Yasuke navigate his new intimacy with Akari and still fulfill his promise to Seori? Find out when this series debuts in February 2016.

Lastly, Kodansha announced the launch of new series Real Account.  This tense thriller has a simple premise: “If you reach zero online followers, you die.” Ataru is one of millions of members on the social networking site Real Account. But one day, he and thousands of others wake up inside a virtual world. Here, if you lose the game, you die for real—taking all your followers with you. And if you run out of followers, it's also game over. This new series with story by Okushou and art by Shizumu Watanabe will debut in English in March 2016.

Beginning with the seventh volume in October 2015, Kodansha revealed, hit series Noragami: Stray God will switch from a bimonthly release schedule to a new volume every month. The move comes in response to readers’ energetic reaction to the series, just in time for the second season of the anime adaptation, which will also air this fall.
