Yamada-kun manga app update: interview with Miki Yoshikawa

KC-Banner_R3_1200x675_FIN

Just in time for Halloween, we've made some updates on the Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches Manga App for iOS. In addition to adding Volumes 3 and 4, you can also now read the complete interview with artist Miki Yoshikawa!

Preview: Interview with Miki Yoshikawa

Miki Yoshikawa has exceptional talent. Not only because she’s one of the few female mangaka (manga artists) who’ve succeeded in shonen (boys’) manga, but because her approach to manga is so genuine. If you ever get lucky enough to meet her, you’ll quickly realize that what makes her a such a unique person is also what makes the characters in her manga so much like real people.

During her visit to Anime Expo 2015, she shared her thoughts and experiences as the author of Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches. Relive some of the excitement around her Stateside visit in this interview and the accompanying photos from her events!

About Miki Yoshikawa

Miki Yoshikawa made her pro manga debut in 2003 with Glory Days, a one-shot in Kodansha’s Magazine Special. After a stint as an assistant for Hiro Mashima (Fairy Tail), she published another one-shot, Yankee-kun to Megane-chan, in Shonen Magazine Wonder in 2005. Thanks to its deft comedic touch, Yankee-kun went on to become a short series and later Yoshikawa’s first long-running series in Weekly Shonen Magazine. It was adapted into a live-action drama in 2010-11. Yoshikawa’s best known work, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, started serialization in 2012 and has since sold more than 3 million copies. It’s been adapted into a live-action drama, in 2013, and a TV anime, in 2015.

Q. How did you become a mangaka?

Miki Yoshikawa (Y): When I was nineteen, I just drew a manga and sent it in to a contest. I sort of studied other manga and picked up how to draw. Then one day, my current editor called me and asked,“Do you want to become a mangaka?” Out of pure excitement, I said,“YES!” [laughs] That was the beginning of everything.

Q. What was the editor’s advice at the time?

Y: I remember telling my editor this was actually the first time I’d ever drawn manga, so it might be a little rough. He totally agreed with me. [laughs] I appreciated his honesty, though. I know he wouldn’t give me false praise if the manga wasn’t actually interesting. That’s what make it so easy to work with him. We’ve been working together ever since—leading up to my debut and also on my current series.

Q. You’ve also worked as an assistant for Hiro Mashima (the creator of Fairy Tail).

Y: After my editor contacted me, I really thought I could be a mangaka. But I also knew that I had to get better. At that time, Mashima-sensei was looking for an assistant, and I knew I wanted to work with him.

It’s been confirmed: at our New York Comic Con panel yesterday, we announced the 24-episode anime series based on The Seven Deadly Sins manga by Nakaba Suzuki starts streaming in English on Netflix November 1. This is the second Netflix Original anime series after Knights of Sidonia.

Here’s an early look at a subtitled trailer:

https://youtu.be/pDk-KT5QdNo

The Seven Deadly Sins, a group of evil knights who conspired to overthrow the kingdom of Britannia, were said to have been eradicated by the Holy Knights, although some claim that they  still live. Ten years later, the Holy Knights have staged a coup d’état and assassinated the king, becoming the new, tyrannical rulers of the kingdom. Elizabeth, the king’s only daughter, sets out on a journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins, and to enlist their help in taking back the kingdom.

shuishu

To celebrate the opening of Kodansha Advanced Media's offices in San Francisco, we're putting on a pop-up and online exhibit of artwork from Kodansha Comics manga past and present. Artwork will be shown from the pages of Ajin, Akira, Attack on Titan, Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, Fairy Tail, The Ghost in the Shell, The Heroic Legend of Arslan, Inuyashiki, Knights of Sidonia, Missions of Love, Noragami, Parasyte, Sailor Moon, Say I Love You, The Seven Deadly Sins, Space Brothers, xxxHolic, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, and Your Lie in April.

Intro

We prefer the art to speak for itself, but for those new to this, manga is Japanese comics. It’s an offshoot of comics that’s grown into its own unique brand, of schools and styles, so that it’s become globally instantly recognizable—Japan’s premier pop-culture art form. And whether it’s publishing cultural touchstones such as Sailor Moon or Akira, or the latest international bestseller in Attack on Titan, Kodansha, one of Japan’s largest publishers with an over-100-year-old history, has been synonymous with manga’s growth and the manga world.

The Kodansha Comics Manga Gallery features some of the most important pages in the medium, such as from The Ghost in the Shell, as well as from its most recent hits—such as the much-talked-about Inuyashiki. With this exhibit, we celebrate some of that history—and celebrate the future as well, through digital eyes.

Special thanks to Andrew Farago and the Cartoon Art Museum, Digital Garage, FOVE, FUNimation, and J-Pop Summit 2015. Exhibit produced by Kodansha Advanced Media.

Coming 2016: Queen Emeraldas, Forget Me Not, Complex Age

queen-emeraldas-1

NEW YORK, NY (July 27, 2015) – At their panel at Otakon this weekend, Kodansha Comics announced they will publish the classic Queen Emeraldas from the legendary creator Leiji Matsumoto, the popular romance series Forget Me Not, as well as the cosplay manga Complex Age.

Beginning in July 2016, Kodansha will publish the 1978 space opera Queen Emeraldas in its first-ever English release. Artist Leiji Matsumoto, possibly best known for his involvement with Space Battleship Yamato, which aired in North America as Star Blazers, is a superstar in Japan and Europe (he directed a feature-length music video for Daft Punk in 2003) but has long been absent from the American manga market. One of his most beloved creations, Queen Emeraldas follows young man Hiroshi Umino after he sneaks aboard a spaceship in order to leave Earth. Queen Emeraldas is coming in July 2016 and will be published in two large-format, hardcover volumes of over 400 pages each.

Known in Japan as Soredemo boku wa kimi ga suki, Forget Me Not is a manga by Nao Emoto based on the popular novel by Taiwanese author Mag Hsu. Serizawa was walking home from work one day when he was struck by a truck. Woozy and injured, he remembers a woman taking him to safety. It was someone he recognized… but who? It’s a romance manga with a dose of mystery! The first volume of Forget Me Not will be released in March 2016.

Kodansha also announced Complex Age, from creator Yui Sakuma, which offers an in-depth look at the life of cosplayer Nagisa Kataura as she gets older and tries to keep her beloved hobby a secret. The series is a thoughtful story sure to resonate with American cosplayers, tackling issues like work-hobby balance, jealous cosplay rivals, and dealing with harassment. Kodansha will start publishing the series is special large-format paperbacks starting in June 2016.
