Interview: Catching up with Fujita, Celebrating 10 Years of Wotakoi

Interview: Catching up with Fujita, Celebrating 10 Years of Wotakoi

In October of this year, during her visit to the Kodansha House pop-up in New York, Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku author Fujita spoke with the English edition series editor Vanessa Tenazas about the bestselling romance series’ 10-year milestone, some behind-the-scenes snippets, and beyond.

Translation by Misaki C. Kido.
This interview has been translated and edited for clarity.

Marking Wotakoi’s 10th Anniversary

Editor: Let’s start with the big milestone—it’s been 10 years since Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku made its debut! How does it feel celebrating this anniversary?

Fujita: It’s brutal to think that it’s already been 10 years. In some ways it feels like such a long time, but in other ways it feels like it went by in a flash.

Editor: It’s also been a few years since Wotakoi officially ended. Do you ever miss working on it?

Fujita: I certainly do miss working on Wotakoi, but at the same time I feel like I still need to take my time and rest (lol). When I look back on when the series was in full swing, I remember it as such a glorious time in my career. Like, wow, I did that, and I can’t help but be impressed with my past self for pulling that off (lol).

Editor: Now, for readers discovering Wotakoi for the first time in 2025, what do you hope they focus on or notice about it?

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku 1, p. 11

Fujita: This manga was written 10 years ago, and I wrote it with the trends of the time in mind. There might be some aspects that still resonate in the same way even now, but a lot of things probably feel different from what’s popular these days, almost like a generational gap, in a way. You might be like, “whoa they’re playing Monster Hunter on PSP” and realize that was cutting-edge tech at the time.

Editor: Oh wow, that’s so true!

Fujita: Exactly. So, I think you can kind of enjoy reading it as a glimpse into what it was like to be an otaku at that time and appreciate how fast times can change.

Editor: Thinking back, if you could send a message to your past self when first starting the series, what would you—

Fujita: “Meet your deadlines! Otherwise, you’re going to cause a great deal of trouble for everyone around you!”

Editor: Ha!

Fujita: Oh, and “If you can’t meet your deadlines, you’re trash!!” (lol)

Editor: That’s an important life lesson!

Fujita: Yes, I think it’s a good one that could apply to any working adult.

[Fujita’s editor was noticeably silent for this question.]

Developing the series:

Editor: Now, we’d like to talk about developing the series itself. Wotakoi has been a huge hit with Western audiences, particularly in America. Did the overseas success ever influence how you approached the story?

Fujita: It didn’t quite happen in that order, really—I didn’t have an international audience in mind when I started this series, I was just writing about things that I really like. And somehow that went over well in the US. It struck me as such a strange phenomenon, to the point where I would like to ask what made it such a hit here.

Editor: I think it’s possible there were readers who saw themselves reflected in the story and characters.

Fujita: In that case, maybe the fandom culture in Japan and overseas are not so different. Our passions and the heart we put into them may be quite similar regardless of where you’re from. So, while there wasn’t any direct influence on the story’s development, maybe that realization is something that came out of it.

Editor: Thank you for sharing that! Moving on to the characters, the three couples in Wotakoi each demonstrated a different approach to romance. Was that something you planned to incorporate from the beginning?

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku 4, p.247

Fujita: Oh, no, no, no (lol). In the beginning, I was very much focused on the two main characters [Narumi and Hirotaka], but as I continued to flesh out the story, I would think things like, “Oh, they could use a senpai” or “oh, he should have a younger brother”, and things evolved from there. Naoya and Ko especially were not intended to be a couple at first. In the beginning, I thought it might be enough for them to just be friends, but as I was working on the series, I started to feel differently about it. Like, maybe that wasn’t enough for them, especially considering how Naoya’s character and personality developed and how his feelings grew. At some point friendship didn’t seem like the ultimate form of their relationship, and it was okay for there to be something more. This was a result of working on the series for a really long time, and I think I owe it to fans for watching over the characters and their personal growth.

Editor: I do feel like the relationship between Naoya and Ko developed very naturally from the reader’s perspective.

Fujita: That’s how it felt for me, too, like they were falling in love in real time. That couple did have the toughest time getting into their romance, after all.

Editor: The embodiment of “love is hard for otaku”!

Editor: Moving on, one of Wotakoi’s unique charms was its deep exploration of otaku and online subcultures. Did you ever have to do any special research on certain otaku terms or concepts that appeared in the story?

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku 2, p.186

Fujita: I have a lot of otaku friends, so I was always kind of in tune with the popular slang they used on the Internet and on social media. I would try to pick up on things naturally in the wild, but then I would confirm with my friends if my understanding or usage of a term is actually correct or not. I would also research a term’s origin sometimes—those sorts of things.

Editor: The localization went through a similar process, so it’s good to hear that that deep research was meaningful. Speaking of which, one interesting detail about Wotakoi is how nearly every page had a clever subtitle at the bottom relating to the joke or scene on the page. Was it ever challenging coming up with those?

Fujita: About part way through the series, my editor actually started coming up with those to save time for me working on the manuscript. I’d come up with the idea, the editor would massage it, and then it goes into the final draft.

Editor: I see! This was also another part of the localization process that was quite challenging (lol).

Fujita: Some of those subtitles reference some really deep otaku subculture subjects, to the point where I’m honestly not sure if people elsewhere or of a younger generation would even understand them (lol). For the funnier pages, the subtitles added a little bit of comedic flair, but when things got really serious, we would leave them out so as not to clash with the mood of the scene. In the end, they were just fun, supplemental captions.

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku 4, p. 99

Editor: It was honestly sometimes hard to tell when something was a reference or not.

Fujita: Since my editor Suzuki-san kind of took over adding those partway, there were even times when I wasn’t sure myself what the original reference was and had to do my own research (lol). Suzuki-san is more knowledgeable about male-oriented stuff like Baki and Gundam, so while he did try to keep it universal, there were times when that bias showed a little. Taking a closer look at them might even be another way to enjoy the series in a new light.

Wotakoi Beyond 2025

Editor: Next, let’s talk a little about after 2025. What do you imagine the characters’ lives will be like 10 years from now?

Fujita: Honestly, I don’t want to think about it—because that would mean imagining Narumi and company as middle-aged ladies, and that would just make me feel old (lol). It would be great to think about living the next ten years as carefree otaku, but in that time family or household issues, stress from work, etc., would come up. These characters do have partners they love and fandoms they’re passionate about, though, so they’ll probably know how to refresh themselves and do selfcare with their partners a little better than the typical corporate drone. Even though life can get tough, I would hope they are all able to lead fun and fulfilling lives, in spite of any challenges they might face.

Editor: Aw, I think that’s a nice way to think about it.

Fujita: Also, I do want to add that I think Hanako would be the type of parent to cosplay together with their kid (lol).

Editor: I could definitely see that! Now, is there anything you’d like to say to fans who might discover Wotakoi for the first time far into the future?

Fujita: Part of me wonders if readers in younger generations will even enjoy this manga (lol). If they do, that could mean that there’s a universal theme or aspect that transcends generations–it could be that, regardless of the times you live in or what may be trending, there will always be people dedicated to their hobbies and passions. The important thing is following your heart and being passionate about the things you like. And if that’s something that resonates with you, I hope you’ll cherish that feeling of caring deeply about something.

Editor: Now, to end us on a fun note, I wanted to go back to something you brought up earlier— what do you think Hanako’s next cosplay project is?

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku 3, p. 118

Fujita: Hanako is the type to cosplay a character she likes from something that’s currently popular. Right now that might be…Hazbin Hotel? It’s quite popular in Japan with season 2 coming up. If I had to say, maybe Alastor? That might be the most mainstream thing in that fandom.

Editor: Oh, wow! In that case, what would Hanako’s kid cosplay as?

Fujita: The little one would be Niffty! So, you’d have Alastor carrying around a little Niffty at his hip. All that said, there were a few times where Hanako’s cosplays were risky to include in the story. I sometimes didn’t get to put exactly what I wanted into the main story due to rights issues—we did have to be careful about that.

Editor: Hanako is a very skilled cosplayer, so it doesn’t help anything she wears would be clearly recognizable (lol). Well, that concludes our questions for today! Was there anything else you wanted to share with fans reading this article?

Fujita: Hmm…do we know if a lot of fans here discovered Wotakoi through the anime? I sort of got the feeling that most people discovered it through that.

Editor: It could be—it certainly helped, but I couldn’t be completely certain if that’s true for most people.

Fujita: I see. Well, I really like watching international fans’ reactions to the Wotakoi anime, for example, because it feels so real to me, and it’s not something I see much among Japanese fans. International audiences don’t hesitate to express their love for something, and I’d love to continue seeing that sort of passion in the future.

In some ways, when you look at things like that from the perspective of a typical Japanese person, it sort of feels like other cultures are a little more advanced when it comes to being open and straightforward. In Japan, it’s not uncommon to fear being ostracized or bullied due to being different or going against the grain. It’s a unique and concerning cultural practice that might be improved by looking at the openness of other cultures—like, it’s okay to like what you like, to be open about your passions, and not be embarrassed by them. It’s this conflict that forms the basis for Narumi’s personal arc [of not wanting to reveal her otaku identity].

Now, in these last 10 years, thanks to some overseas influence, young people in Japan today are a little more aware of the importance of that openness, which means Narumi’s arc may not come across as clearly to newer readers—younger readers may even wonder what she has to be embarrassed about—and in a way, her storyline not making sense anymore can be seen as a sign of cultural progress. At the same time, I think it’s still important to prioritize an individual’s feelings—just because you personally don’t find it embarrassing, forcing someone else to reveal a part of themselves they are uncomfortable with isn’t quite right either. Watching over someone as they move at their own pace is the sort of thing I had in mind when writing Wotakoi.

And so, for anyone who might be confused as to the relevance of Narumi’s anxiety around her otaku identity, I hope you’ll consider that idea.

Editor: I sincerely hope that will come across to readers new and old—that it’s okay to open up about things you might be insecure about at your own pace, in a safe space. Even ten years from now, I think people will find courage in that. Thank you so much for sharing!

Kodansha USA to Release Long-Awaited Sequel to Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s Bestselling Memoir

Download Press Release

Japanese pop-culture icon Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, whose bestselling autobiography Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window, first published in 1981, did as much as any book to set the tone for Japan’s postwar culture, has now published her long-awaited sequel to that memoir. The original installment, Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window, which chronicled the writer’s Tokyo childhood and eclectic school life in the run-up to World War II, quickly soared past all previous publishing records in Japan; by the end of 1982, it had become the bestselling book in the country’s history, a distinction it maintains with over 8 million domestic sales to date. A true international phenomenon, it has gone on to sell an astounding, Guinness World Record-breaking 26 million copies worldwide in dozens of languages. Now, over four decades later, Kodansha USA will release the first-ever English translation of Kuroyanagi’s recently published and eagerly anticipated follow-up, Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel, translated by Yuki Tejima.

“I’m excited to share that my memoir, Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel, will soon be released in English,” said author and cultural icon, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. “It has been over forty years in the making and I put my whole heart and soul into it. I hope you all enjoy it.”

Kuroyanagi ended her original, seminal memoir with a heartbreaking scene in which her beloved elementary school, Tomoe Gakuen, burned down amidst the air raids of World War II. Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel begins with her family’s frantic effort to escape Tokyo and the worst horrors of the war. In it, Kuroyanagi details how little Totto persevered through starvation and suffering to become a trailblazing actress, a champion for the deaf and children the world over, and one of the most successful entertainers in Japanese history. Now in her nineties, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi has said of her motivation for penning The Sequel,“I wanted to write about the war while I still remember it.”

Already an established literary classic, Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window reached a new generation in 2023 with the release of an anime film adaptation of the story. The critically lauded picture was produced and animated by Shin-Ei Animation, distributed by TOHO, and directed by Shinnosuke Yakuwa, Yuta Kanbe, and Kunio Kato, with Liliana Ono in the leading role as Totto-chan. Kodansha USA has arranged a screening of the acclaimed film at the Japan Society in New York on November 25, 2025.

To commemorate this long-awaited release, Kodansha USA will also be sponsoring book-launch events in New York City at the New York Public Library 53rd Street Branch and Kinokuniya Bookstore.

“Told with the same disarming charm as the original memoir, the anime connected Totto-chan’s story with a new audience,” said Kodansha USA Publishing President & CEO Alvin Lu. “Now the English-language publication of Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel picks up where that story left off and allows readers to discover the full life story of one of the most influential and inspiring women in Japanese history.”

Today, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi remains one of Japan’s most popular and celebrated media personalities. Her enduring presence is best represented by the success of her long-running television show, Tetsuko’s Room (Tetsuko no Heya), which began airing almost fifty years ago in 1976. In 2011, the program earned a Guinness World Record for the highest number of talk show broadcasts by the same host, a record which it continues to break with every new episode.

An inspirational philanthropist, Kuroyanagi was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF—the first from Asia—in 1984 and has visited 40 countries in that capacity. She is also on the board of the World Wide Fund for Nature Japan and provides professional training to deaf actors through The Totto Foundation, which is financed with her book royalties. She has written over twenty books, including co-authored works.

Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel was originally published in Japan on October 3, 2023 and will be published by Kodansha USA Publishing on November 18, 2025. Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window remains in print with Kodansha USA Publishing.

Introducing the Trailblazing Woman behind Totto-chan

Introducing the Trailblazing Woman behind Totto-chan

Kodansha USA Throws a Celebration for the Little Girl at the Window

By Alexandra McCullough-Garcia, with editorial assistance by Daniel Joseph and Alvin Lu

The train rocked Totto as it chugged along in the dark, bound for Aomori Prefecture. She could see nothing at all through the window. Totto was perched in the middle of a two-seater bench. At her sides were not her mother, Noriaki-chan, or Mari-chan, however, but a middle-aged man and woman, neither of whom she knew. She was all alone. In her right hand, she clutched the train ticket Mother had given her as well as a note that read: Ueno, Fukushima, Sendai, Morioka, Shiriuchi.

It was the middle of March in the year the war would end.

— from Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, translated by Yuki Tejima

So begins one of the most thrilling chapters from Japanese postwar-cultural icon Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s recently translated autobiography Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel. The heart-pounding scene picks up exactly where her original, world record-breaking memoir ended, and begins to answer the burning question left in the millions of hearts it captured: What ever happened to Totto-chan?

This year, on November 18, 2025—over four decades after Totto-chan first burst onto the global stage—Kodansha USA brings the world the story of how that little girl became a trailblazing, multifaceted star, internationally renowned philanthropist, celebrated author, and one of the most enduring media presences in Japanese entertainment.

“I am excited to announce that my memoir, Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel, will soon be released in English. It has been forty years in the making, and I put my whole heart and soul into it,” said author Testuko Kuroyanagi. “I hope you enjoy it!”

In celebration of Ms. Kuroyanagi’s career and legacy, Kodansha USA will also host events in New York City around the date of the book’s publication at the Japan Society, the New York Public Library, and Kinokuniya Bookstore (see Event Details below).

A Special Message from Tetsuko Kuroyanagi

Who Is Tetsuko Kuroyanagi?

Above all an actor and TV celebrity, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s long career spans Japan’s rise from the ashes of World War II through the halcyon Bubble Economy years to the present day. “She’s just an institution. I mean, she really is just someone that everyone in Japan knows,” said Aaron Gerow, professor of Japanese culture and media at Yale University in a recent conversation with Kodansha USA. She is a figure “you need to know in order to understand Japan today,” like “Oprah, but with three times the length of her career.”

Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s role in creating Japanese television was so central that she is sometimes called the country’s first TV star. After initially rocketing to fame on the radio in 1954, she became one of the very first women on Japanese television at the public broadcaster NHK, which had just branched out into the relatively new medium in 1952. She went on to act on stage, anchor the news, star in dozens of TV dramas, and host numerous shows that regularly garnered millions of viewers, often juggling several concurrently. Due to the differing focus of these programs, she tended to capture a remarkably wide demographic, including “young people, very young generation to maybe one hundred years old,” as Ms. Kuroyanagi herself told Johnny Carson when appearing on The Late Show in 1982 to promote her first memoir, Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window.

Tetsuko Kuroyanagi was interviewed shortly after her rise to fame in radio by many publications, including NHK Radio Weekly.

Her daily talk show Tetsuko’s Room, the first of its kind on Japanese TV, began broadcasting in 1976 on TV Asahi and is still going strong to this day. It distinguishes itself not only for its longevity but also for the fact that, much like the television shows on which Ms. Kuroyanagi cut her teeth, its episodes are not edited but aired in their entirety. In the almost fifty years the program has been running, Ms. Kuroyanagi has interviewed such varied and distinguished guests as Yo-Yo Ma, Olivia Newton-John, Margaret Thatcher, Naomi Campbell, David Copperfield, Mikhail Gorbachev (twice), Will Smith, Richard Gere, Lady Gaga, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, and Tom Cruise. Of course, many of the most influential Japanese celebrities of the past five decades have also appeared to chat with Tetsuko-san, as she is affectionately called by her guests, including artist Yoko Ono, actor Ken Watanabe, Olympic figure skating gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu, singer-songwriter Fujii Kaze, and baseball star Shohei Ohtani. With each new episode aired, the program once again breaks the Guinness World Record it first set in 2023 for the most TV talk show episodes hosted by the same presenter.

Although she has slowed significantly in recent years, Ms. Kuroyanagi is still a constant presence in Japanese entertainment. The most popular comedians have a working Tetsuko-san impression ready to deploy when needed, and it is an honor and symbol of success to be invited as a guest on her Tetsuko’s Room. Simply appearing next to her on programs such as TBS’s Hitachi Sekai Fushigi Hakken (Discovery of the World’s Mysteries), a variety quiz show on which she often competed as a contestant and regularly won, was enough to elevate one to stardom.

Ms. Kuroyanagi is also well known for her various philanthropic pursuits. Fascinated by the beauty of sign language since childhood, she used her book royalties to establish the Totto Foundation, a charitable organization that provides assistance to people with disabilities, with a particular focus on the deaf. The Totto Foundation also offers sign language lessons and runs the Japanese Theatre of the Deaf, which trains deaf actors and holds performances meant to be enjoyed by the hearing and hearing impaired alike. Ms. Kuroyanagi has likewise collaborated with the American Theatre for the Deaf, twice inviting troupes over to Japan for performances. She appeared on stage with them, acting in sign language.

A devoted conservationist, she is credited as being the person who made the panda popular in Japan and is often seen with panda imagery on her television appearances. Even the home page for her daily talk show features an illustration of Ms. Kuroyanagi hugging a cuddly panda, and she is reported to own several hundred such stuffed animals. Her advocacy helped bring the first two panda cubs from China to Japan in 1972 and has become such a well-known aspect of her celebrity that it has given rise to the common statement in Japan: “Tetsuko equals pandas,” according to Professor Gerow. She currently sits on the board of directors for the World Wildlife Fund Japan and is the Honorary Chairman of the Panda Protection Institute of Japan.

Perhaps most famously outside of Japan, Ms. Kuroyanagi was appointed a
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1984, the first from Asia and the longest-serving ambassador to date. In that capacity she has traveled to almost forty countries to raise awareness and support children suffering from conflict, poverty, and disease, documenting her missions in video reports. Until 2013, Ms. Kuroyanagi periodically devoted episodes of her talk show to fundraising efforts, and she continues to leverage her celebrity to shine a spotlight on UNICEF’s causes through discussions with her various guests as well as meetings with high-profile UNICEF executives. According to the UN, she has raised more than $55.5 million for UNICEF programs.

In 1984, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi became the first UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador from Asia.

Despite the magnitude of these charitable undertakings, Ms. Kuroyanagi’s most impactful, and perhaps most enduring, contribution to culture has come through literature: her bestselling Totto-chan books have become certified classics and some of the world’s most beloved literary depictions of childhood.

A Certain Glow: Introducing Totto-chan

Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window was first published in 1981, when the author was already a well-known actor and celebrity in Japan appearing nearly daily on a variety of television programs. It is told from the point of view of Totto-chan (as Ms. Kuroyanagi was called as a child), an uncontrollably curious little girl whose antics get her expelled from first grade after only one week. Thanks to the unconventional teaching methods of headmaster Sousuke Kobayashi, however, she manages to find the goodness in herself and community with other misfits at Kobayashi’s Tomoe Gakuen, a school which repurposed decommissioned train cars as classrooms and embraced students with diverse needs.

On the one hand an artless narration of the author’s elementary school years, the book also shocked Japanese society with the groundbreaking approach to education it detailed, one which prioritizes trust in children and allows them an unprecedented amount of freedom. Ms. Kuroyanagi’s fond retelling of her experience provided a compelling case for educational reform and encouraged children, parents, and teachers alike to reconsider Japan’s demanding school schedule and curricula.

Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window quickly became a literary sensation, sparking a veritable “Totto-chan Boom” of media attention and popularity. By the end of 1982, it had become the bestselling book of all time in Japan—a distinction it maintains to this day, with over eight million copies sold domestically—and has gone on to sell roughly twenty-six million copies to date worldwide. In 2023, it broke the Guinness World Record for most copies published for an autobiographical memoir by a single author.

Ms. Kuroyanagi’s first memoir Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window broke publishing records in Japan and around the world.

“It kind of represents Japan in the 1980s,” which was, according to Professor Gerow, an “efflorescence of Japanese pride and culture, as well as a time of various kinds of Japanese popular culture that later on become quite important,” such as anime and manga. Assisted by the artist Chihiro Iwasaki’s loving illustrations of childhood included in the book, it also tapped into a burgeoning shojo bunka (young girl’s culture), which valorized the stories of assertive young heroines. The memoir “became a bright point in a long genealogy of plucky little girls in Japanese popular culture in the late 1970s and 1980s,” said Nathan Shockey, Associate Professor of Japanese at Bard College, stretching from “the beloved anime adaptations of Heidi and Anne of Green Gables to the mischievous and endearing Chibi Maruko-chan.” Although the period was defined by intense economic competition,“Totto-chan and her compatriots had an extraordinary ability to resonate with readers and offer an alternative way of being in the world, one that would continue to inspire, from the works of Studio Ghibli up through contemporary anime like Little Witch Academia.”

Totto-chan, as Ms. Kuroyanagi was known as a child, by her uncle Shuji Taguchi’s home in Kamakura.

More than a simple memoir, Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window became a literary classic thanks to the charm with which it evokes the magic of childhood. For contemporary readers outside Japan, its unforgettable portraits of whimsical walks to a nearby temple, delighting in the beauty of a fine silk bow, and “camping” in the school hall to see a new railroad car roll onto campus captured the wonderful, soft pastel glow of a little girl’s life in simpler times, even as the growing war began to take its toll.

Little Totto Grows Up: The Sequel

Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s long-awaited follow-up memoir Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel will go on sale on November 18, 2025.

Little Totto did not stay little forever, however, and in 2023 Tetsuko Kuroyanagi published the definitive continuation of her tale. Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel invites readers back into that charming world as it stands on the brink of change. Through the innocent eyes of a child, it chronicles how the shadow of war started to snuff out the joys in Totto’s life until some days, she had no more than fifteen roasted soybeans to eat. The more the war escalated, the more frequently her family was forced to seek shelter in the small bunker they had dug in their yard. One night, Totto recalls seeing the Tokyo sky blaze red with “a terrifying glow” so bright, she could read her schoolbooks in the yard as if in broad daylight.

If Kuroyanagi’s scenes of war hit close to home, it’s no coincidence: they are as much a reflection of our world today as of her childhood memories. In an interview with The New York Times, Ms. Kuroyanagi said she was compelled to write this follow-up partly in response to the scenes she was witnessing out of Ukraine, and she mentions in the afterword to The Sequel that one of her motivations in penning the memoir was to leave a record of her own wartime experiences.

And yet, The Sequel is much more than a chronicle of wartime struggle. It is a tale of resilience, of the courage to dream, and of extraordinary achievement in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Ms. Kuroyanagi’s rise from the literal ashes of war to the pinnacle of Japanese entertainment is a timely reminder of the strength of the human spirit. It is a story sure to inspire a whole new generation to dream big, wander when unsure, and chase what you love. “The Sequel is a book you can revisit over and over again and come away with brand new discoveries each time,” said Kodansha USA Publisher Toshihiro Tsuchiya. “It is a story you can appreciate at any age and at every age.”
